Embryos of reptiles develop faster at warmer temperatures than in cooler surroundings, with survivorship being highest around some optimal temperature. Temperatyres at either extreme result in mortality, although the eggs of the Australian tortoise, Chelonia espansa, apparently survive long periods at temperatures as low as 5 C.
