Effects of Grazing on the Vegetation of the Blackbrush Association

Four blackbrush communities in the Kaiparowits Basin with varying degrees of grazing pressure were compared for vegetative cover. A relict site had significantly more herbaceous vegetation cover (composed primarily of perennial grasses) and total cover than any other site. The relict site also had significantly more shrub and cryptogamic cover than the heavily grazed or recovery sites. The recovering site (10 years) showed no significant difference from the heavily grazed site for any of the measured aspects. Bibliography, tables
