Effects of Helicopter Censuses on Wading Bird Colonies

The objectives of the study were to assess the disruptive effects of helicopter censuses on wading bird colonies; as well as to evaluate the accuracy and economics of helicopter use. Tests were conducted comparing bird response to fixed-wing aircraft and to a helicopter in the Everglades region. Observers ranked the birds' reactions on a numerical scale. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for statistical analysis. The results revealed that disturbances caused by helicopter censuses were minor and of short duration.
