Evidence from various sources-tree growth during the past century, chemical composition of waters of various lakes, plakton volumes, size of young salmon migrating seaward-tends to indicate that the fertilization of lake water in western Alaska by volcanic ash during sporadic eruptions may be an important factor in determining the abundance of sockeye salmon.
