Long-lasting large logs and other organic debris affect processes in smaller streams of redwood forests. This report contrasts Prairie Creek (a meandering stream with little elevation change) with Little Lost Man (in steep, mountainous terrain). The paper discusses effects of organic debris on channel form, the storage of sediment, and more, with particular emphasis on the way these affect habitat for anadromous fish. While some debris jams can block fish migration, a certain amount improves conditions for fish. The paper concludes with a preliminary statement on management of large organic debris and 9 specific conclusions. Includes 8 morphologic maps, channel profiles, a table of ages for debris (at least 220 years).
