This thesis study concerns the relationship of a perennial woody vine to fire. The study site is Raccoon Point, Big Cypress National Preserve. The plant, found only in south Florida pinelands, has a sturdy rootstock which allows survival of fire. Experimental burning shows that while seedlings are not dependent on fire for germination, an increase in successful reproduction follows fire. The thesis examines differences among summer and winter fires of varying intensity. Study results suggest that 'summer burning may provide the best means to maintain the fittest population' [page 82]. With one original black-and-white print showing the plant.
