This final report consists of three studies resulting from collaborative research between Dr. James W. Porter (University of Georgia) and Dr. Caroline Rogers (U.S. National Park Service). Chapter 1 concerns "Coral Bleaching: Stable Isotopic and Photosynthetic Responses." It is an investigation into the causes and consequences of the widespread "bleaching" of corals that occurred in the Virgin Islands National Park and throughout the Caribbean during the fall of 1987. This paper has appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and is included in reprint form in this report. Chapter 2 concerns the ''Effects of Sedimentation on Coral Metabolism." It presents evidence on the highly adverse effects of terrigenous sediments on coral productivity, respiration, and energy consumption. Chapter 2 presents data collected in The Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, U.S.V.I. with co-author Dr. Caroline Rogers. Chapter 3 concerns the ''Sediment Rejection in Caribbean Reef Corals: The Influence of Morphology and Sediment Size on the Energetic Cost of Clearing." This study, funded in part by the National Park Service and in part by the N.O.A.A. Aquarius Habitat Program in St. Croix, U.S.V.I. focuses on the influence of coral morphology in the sediment clearing process.
