Effects of the La Mesa Fire on Total Nitrogen Content of Forest Soils in Bandelier National Monument

Freeman CE. 1978. Effects of the La Mesa Fire on Total Nitrogen Content of Forest Soils in Bandelier National Monument. National Park Service

Soil samples taken on three mesas and one mesic forest site at Bandelier National Monument, NM, were compared to determine the effects of fire on the total nitrogen content. Samples from the Frijoles Mesa had not recently been influenced by fire, whereas the samples taken from Burnt and Escobas Mesas had been burned over to some degree by the La Mesa Fire. The Apache Springs site sustained a light burn. This report attempts to demonstrate how fire lowers the nitrogen content of soils.
