Control of feral horse (Equus caballus) populations on federal lands in the western United states, since their protection by federal legislation in 1971, has been difficult and controversial. Constraints on management alternatives have been imposed by Congress and public interest groups. One management technique is temporary sterilization of dominant males to reduce reproductive rates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sterilizing dominant males to reduce foaling rates of feral horses for several years in Nevada and Oregon.
