Electrophoretic Variation in Two Species of Ranid Frogs, Rana boylei and R. muscosa

Seventeen loci were examined in the frogs Rana boylei and R. muscosa to 1) assess levels of genic variation, and 2) to examine the relationship between them. Average heterozygosities, as measured by the percentage of polymorphic loci, ranged from 9% to 47% in different populations. These values are similar to those reported in other vertebrates. Intraspecific Nei distances are low (D̄ = 0.015 for R. boylei; D̄ = 0.038 for R. muscosa), while the mean distance between these two species is 0.728. This data, as well as consideration of karyological and immunological data, suggest R. muscosa is not polyphyletic with respect to R. boylei.
