The National Park Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cooperated in a five-year study to quantitatively assess the abundance, composition, and accumulation of marine debris on national park beaches on the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific coasts, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cape Hatteras National Seashore was included in this study. This study, the National Park Service Marine Debris Monitoring Program, was the first comprehensive analysis of marine debris in the United States. Debris accumulation varied considerably between years for all parks. Located within this report are the results.
