To develop a biomonitoring protocol for streams in National Parks in the Great Plains, the variation of some commonly used invertebrate community indices was measured for 10 warmwater streams sites during Feb.-Nov. 1989 and for 3 warmwater stream sites during June-Aug. 1989. Streams were sampled with a surber sampler or a hester-dendy artificial substrate sampler. The study objectives were to: (1) identify the main sources of variation in invertebrate community structure in warmwater streams in six National Parks in the Great Plains, (2) devise the most cost efficient sampling strategy, and (3) develop biological criteria for detecting changes in water quality. In addition, stram quality trends and the most recent status of stream water quality at the Great Plains National Parks were investigated.
