This report fulfills one of the conditions of a special permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open the Redwood Creek estuary to the sea for flood control and habitat improvement. (Permit is Appendix A.) The report summarizes estuary management activities by Redwood National Park during 1993, including estimating populations of salmonids and other fish, monitoring water quality, and managing the water level. Estuary water reached almost four feet above the standard 6-foot MSL (Mean Sea Level) point after a storm in November, and the controlled breaching of the berm by park staff allowed a gradual draining; most salmonids had migrated to the ocean before this, while the mouth of the estuary was open. The park is working toward long-term solutions to land-use and resource problems at the estuary, and a copy of management alternatives and strategy (sections VI and VII of the Draft Estuary Management Plan) are in Appendix B. Other illustrations include counts of seined fish, with note of fish reared in the hatchbox program for mitigation at Prairie Creek, a chart of daily water elevations (June-December), and a list of dates when the water level exceeded 6 feet.
