This 1990 environmental assessment by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concerns environmental restoration of the Lava Lake weather station which was abandoned in the 1950s. The project site is located within Bering Land Bridge National Park approximately 60 miles east of Teller. Field reconnaissance and sampling at the site occurred in 1985 and 1986, with debris found on a low ridge above Lava Lake and on its eastern shore. The primary sources of contamination are approximately 264 55-gallon drums, many of which evidenced leakage. The recommended plan for restoration consists of excavation, off-site incineration and return of 300 cubic yards of contaminated soils, and removal and disposal of liquid wastes in an approved landfill. The report finds that no significant environmental impact will accrue.
