This report describes a project carried out by the author between October 1981 and May 19821 to assemble information on the terrestrial environment and potential natural vegetation of the island of St. John. U.S. Virgin Islands. approximately three quarters of which is included in the boundaries of the Virgin Islands National Park. The main goal of the project was to provide a readily-accessible source of basic information in anticipation of several planned long-term studies of the ecosystems in and adjacent to the National Park. To this end. the results of the project were synthesized in a series of five large-scale maps showing the distribution of major environmental factors and existing land use. This report presents the conceptual framework and methods used in the study. and provides supplementary information and literature documentation for the maps.
