This document is intended to assist in assessing the effects of existing and future mining activities, preparing individual compliance documents, and preparing plans of operations for mining in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The Park contains 280 recorded unpatented placer claims encompassing about 9,300 acres and 47 recorded unpatented lode claims covering some 940 acres. The claims occur in two primary areas along upper tributaries of the Koyukuk River and along the Noatak River. The majority of claims occur in the Koyukuk region, mainly along the north and middle tributaries. This area has 250 recorded placer claims and one recorded lode claim. The report contains background sections on the natural and cultural resources of the Park, the environmental effects of mining, and mitigating measures and recommendations. Appendices contain legislative information, an overview of mining law and regulations, names and addresses of claimants, mining claim types and operations, and wildlife in the Koyukuk and Noatak areas.
