This 1982 study was prepared to assist in assessing the effects of existing and future mining operations in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. At the time this report was written, the Preserve contained 284 placer gold mining claims and other mineral encumbrances. These existed prior to establishment of the Preserve and could therefore be open to future mining operations. The report describes the existing environment including climate, hydrology and water quality, geology and soils, vegetation, wildlife, air quality, recreation and aesthetic qualities, and cultural resources; provides a general analysis of the environmental effects of mining in the Preserve, which is intended to eliminate the need for separate detailed environmental reviews in all but the most complex cases; addresses immediate management concerns regarding currently active mining operations; and lays out mitigating measures and recommendations. Additional information is presented in attached maps that cover mine access and land status, as well as mining claims for Thanksgiving Creek, Woodchopper and Coal creeks, Sam and Ben creeks, and Fourth of July Creek.
