This report presents preliminary observations of the 1953 eruption of Trident Volcano, which had been assumed to be extinct. Most of the information reported was obtained during flights of U.S. Navy planes. Supplementary information was also obtained from observers in U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard, and commercial planes. The first close aerial observations were made on February 18. At this time a thick, blocky lava flow was seen issuing from a new vent at 3,600 ft on the southwest flank of Trident Volcano.
