This paper by Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and U.S. National Park Service researchers discusses mark-recapture methods and summarizes the results of population dynamics, movement, and habitat-use studies of grizzly bears within the 6,700 km2 Noatak River Study Area. This area is bordered on the north by the Wulik River, on the south by the Noatak River, west by the Chukchi coast, and east as far as the Kugururok River. Grizzly bear densities within the area were estimated using mark-recapture methods during late May and early June 1987. Radio-collars were used to mark bears. Density estimates were 1 bear/66 km2 for adults (>3-years-old) and 1 bear/51 km2 for bears of all ages. Annual harvest rates in recent years range from an estimated 8 to 16%.
