This article attempts to 1) assess the areal distribution of a high sulfate ground water enclave; 2) outline suspected sulfate source areas; and 3) contrast present sulfate water quality data with known evaporites in caves of the Mississippian Plateau Region, Kentucky. The Flint-Mammoth supersystem contains certain rare cave occurring sulfates (epsomite, hexahydrite, blodite, mirabilite, and authigenic gypsum, barite, and celestite). It is suggested that some sulfates found in subsediments of cave passages may owe their existence to a paleo-recharge area under the Sinkhole Plain these sulfates being removed in solution and transported by ground water from Mississippian sebkhas to cave passages.
