A total of 52 recognized kinds of fishes composing 45 species and 26 genera in 13 families are found in the waters on and immediately adjacent to Isle Royale. Only three are not native. This report consists of a general evaluation of the status of the fishery resources of Isle Royale National Park and includes a discussion of the sport and commercial fisheries. The opportunities for interpretation and research of these significant park features is discussed. Guidelines for the preservation, interpretation and research of these aquatic resources are presented. Appendix D of this study is a memo from Isle Royale National Park Superintendent George Baggley to the Director of the National Park Service. In this memorandum, Mr. Baggley gives statistics regarding the kinds and pounds of fish caught by commercial fisherman in the 1930's and early 1940's and refers to some stocking of fish in the Isle Royale area.
