Evidence of Hurricane Influence on Barrier Island Slash Pine Forests in the Northern Gulf of Mexico
Stoneburner DL. 1978. Evidence of Hurricane Influence on Barrier Island Slash Pine Forests in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The American Midland Naturalist. 99(1):234-237
A study concerned with the effects of hurricanes on slash pine (Pinus elliottii) forests on Petit Bois, Horn, East Ship, and Cat Islands in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. Ring patterns from slash pine core samples were compared to the historical hurricane record. The time frames of wide-ring patterns coincided between islands. The results are discussed and presented in tabular form.
