The study was begun with the goal of determining if there is an exchange of seeds between the spruce forest and the adjoining beech gap. The seed bank was sampled for evidence. It was found that the lack of shrubs beneath the beech trees permitted some germination of spruce, whereas the spruce forest had many shrubs that would deny light to beech seedlings. The prognosis was that the spruce can invade the beech gaps, but only very slowly.
