The major objectives of this report which includes the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, The New River Gorge National River, and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River are: (1) to carry out an extensive literature review of psychological, social psychological, sociological, and philosophical lines of thought related to leisure and recreation experiences; (2) to identify major theoretical approaches to characterize the psychological aspects of the recreation experience across a range of disciplines and perspectives, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses; (3) to discuss in-depth interviews with key academics working in parallel fields of endeavor; (4) to explore the varying lines of thought in recreation research toward an integration into a holistic theoretical approach; and, (5) to suggest methodologies for applications of this model in the field and how the manager might derive benefits from the model.
