This article describes the biology and former distribution in the Rio Grande, NM, of two extirpated fishes, the Rio Grande bluntnose shiner (Notropis simus simus) and the phantom shiner (Notropis orca). Collections made along the Rio Grande did not yield any specimens. The possible extinction of both fishes is speculated. This report contains extensive biological data from previous collections of these fish. Includes mention of the disappearance of two other fishes, the Rio Grande shiner (Notropis jemezanus) and the speckled chub (Hybopsis aestivalis).
