Factors Involved in the Persistence of Montane Treeless Balds
Billings WD and Mark AF. 1957. Factors Involved in the Persistence of Montane Treeless Balds. Ecology. 38(1):140 - 142
The authors state that balds occur along forest margins, where trees are near the limit of climatic tolerance. The climate has been cooling, eliminating individual hardwoods at their extreme altitudinal range, while the conifers nearer the mountain tops have a slower rate of advance. The spaces between the two forests become balds.
