Faunal analysis of late Quaternary vertebrates from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, southwestern Arizona

Vegetation and animal remains fossilized in packrat middens provide information about past conditions. In this study at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, 667 specimens representing 34 taxa were recovered. Radiocarbon dating gives a range of 32,000 to 1,150 years BP for these fossils. Vegetation composed the largest part of the middens, with vertebrate specimens being mostly from small mammals and reptiles. Species accounts also note modern distribution and habitat.
