A method was developed to produce containerized pitch pine seedlings specifically adapted to each of the Parks (Cape Cod, Fire Island, and Gateway). Seed may be collected from about the second week of September to mid-November. The average germination rate of 54 families was 50.2% in the nursery situation. The mean number of seeds/cone was 95.2 for 46 families and the number of expected germinants per cone was 45.5 for these same 46 families. In an experiment to determine optimum potting medium pH seedlings growing in a mix of peat/vermiculite/sand (1/1/1) and amendments, with a pH of approximately 4.8, were significantly larger in volume (p<0.05) at pH values of 6.5 and 7.0 than at 4.5 and 5.0. Progeny testing was used to select parent trees producing the most vigorous seedlings for use at both Cape Cod and Fire Island. Analysis of surviving seedlings from the Cape Cod data set suggests that seedlings should be grown to above a minimum stem diameter of 2.8 mm before outplanting. Other general information is contained within this report that should enable Park Service personnel to successfully grow and outplant pitch pine seedlings.
