In January 1979, the National Wildlife Federation sponsored a multi-agency cooperative count of wintering bald eagles throughout the lower 48 states and portions of Canada, the most comprehensive survey of the species to date. The final tally indicated 9,282 bald eagles counted throughout the major portion of their wintering range. This represented the highest number of wintering eagles ever recorded in a survey.
