This study began as a fire history and ecology report of Bandelier National Monument, NM, but became a pre- and post-fire ecological analysis when the study period was interrupted by the La Mesa Fire of 1977. There are data comparisons of herbaceous cover, foliar damage, sapling and pole-sized tree densities, and phytosociology in pre-and post-fire sites. Includes a fire history of the area and descriptions of the following fire events: Alamo Rim 1945 burn; Bear Mesa 1950 fire; Frijoles Rim 1878, 1937, and 1960 burns; Frijoles Canyon 1960 fire; Escobas Mesa 1976 burn; and Burnt Mesa 1975 burn. Plant succession within burned and control plots is described by species.
