Results of sampling over period 1972 through 1992 of 16 fire sites in the submontane seasonal zone of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Authors report that fires significantly reduced native vegetation. Native ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) was especially heavily affected. Establishment of certain alien species was enhanced by the fires. Continued fire suppression in the zone is recommended.
