This study examined the historical role of fire and its effects within a pinyon-juniper woodland in northern Arizona. Cross-sections were cut from dead snags, stumps and logs of trees evidently killed by past fires. Tree cores were extracted from living trees exhibiting fire scars and from living trees rooted near dead, burned trees. Samples were cross-dated to estimate when trees were killed or scarred by fire.
