Observations in 1963 are combined with a literature search and the author's field notes over the last 15 years to assess the fish fauna of creeks in the redwood forests of northwest California. Little variety is found: 14 common species, plus 19 of restricted occurrence. The paper discusses habitats and effects of timber harvest (siltation, increased turbidity, flooding, and barriers to migration). The cutthroat trout would probably benefit most from protection of redwood forests. Contains original black-and-white prints (degraded habitat, lower Redwood Creek, five species of fish). Tables: damaged creeks, creeks and their timber status, salmon production (including Redwood Creek). Colored distribution map for 3 species. Two appendices: lists of freshwater or anadromous fishes a) common to the coast redwood region, and b) of restricted occurrence in the redwood region.
