Fish Assemblage Structure of Barrier Island Tidepools

Doherty TA. 1987. Fish Assemblage Structure of Barrier Island Tidepools. University of Southern Mississippi

A study concerned with the fish assemblages in tide pools on Horn Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida and Mississippi. There is a description of the barrier islands and the study sites. The tide pools were sampled at 4 times during the year. Fish were sampled by repeated seineing until no new species were caught. Fish were identified, measured, and a subsample was examined for stomach contents and biomass. The volume and surface area of the tide pools were estimated. The following environmental parameters were recorded: alkalinity, turbidity, pH, salinity, water temperature, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, percent saturation of oxygen, sediment, vegetation, and distance from surf zone. The results concerning species assemblages, seasonality, community changes, relationships between abundance and environmental parameters, and trophic structure are discussed and presented in tabular form. A map shows the locations of the tide pools sampled. Species lists show scientific names and relative abundances and biomasses at different sampling periods.
