The fishes of George Washington Carver National Monument

This study, conducted by an associate of Missouri Southern State College, documents the first formal inventory of fishes in Carver, Williams and Harkins Branches within the boundaries of George Washington Carver National Monument. It also identifies the Orange-spotted Sunfish as the only endangered species found in the park during the study. Water quality within the area streams is discussed for use in comparison between fish diversity and water quality. The soil content and layout of the area is discussed as well as the vegetative growth. A brief discussion is included on the present environmental impacts on the park and the watersheds represented. Sampling, observation, preservation and identification methods is given. A description of each station and the results found is included. Conclusions and recommendation based on findings of the study are also included as well as a "Species Management Plan." The study includes color photographs of the tall grass prairie northeast of the area, vegetative growth of the area, Harkins Branch on the north boundary, Carver Branch on the east boundary, Diamond sewage oxidation pond, Carver Branch along the nature trail, Harkins Branch on the west boundary, Upper Harkins Branch, Williams Branch, and Williams Spring Pond. A table lists the stream nearest the station, the station number, vegetation and substrate present, dimension, depth and discharge of stream for each sampling stations. A map identifies the locations of each sampling station within the area. A list is included which identifies the results of the survey grouped by the common name and includes the scientific name, classification (oligotrophic, eutrophic, wide range of tolerance, more eutropic) and frequency of species (rare, common, abundant). Also included are the results grouped by sampling station number.
