Fishes of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

A baseline inventory of the fish of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI was conducted over a 5 week period in June and July 1995. Eighteen sampling sites from 10 streams and 4 lakes were sampled once each during midday hours. Smaller streams were sampled with a 4 ft. x 15 ft. seine over a distance of 100 m. Larger streams and lakes were sampled with a 4 ft. x 30 ft. seine for the same distance. At most sampling sites temperature, pH, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, and dissolved oxygen data were taken (specific methods and instruments are not discussed). Estimates about stream width, water depth, flow, percent shade, percent substrate composition (sand, cobble, and gravel), and surrounding vegetation were recorded. Fish were identified to species and measured to the nearest mm. Larger specimens were released. Smaller ones were preserved in 10% formalin, rinsed, and represerved in 70% ethanol. Data about average length of each species, the standard deviation, and number of individuals of each species are presented in table format by collection site and by species. Figures further illustrate populations of lake fish collected. Nineteen species from 16 sites were identified. Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries data from a report by Limnetics, Inc. (1970) are included for comparison.
