This sheet describes the monitoring work by the USGS at Cunningham Falls State Park on the acidity of the precipitation and stream water. The Catoctin Mountain watershed receives some of the most acidic rain in the nation. During storm events it causes episodic acidification of streams. Streams on metabasalt are well buffered, but streams on quartzite are poorly buffered and the pH has often dropped below levels acceptable to aquatic organisms.
