An analysis of limiting factors and the likelihood for preservation of the endangered Florida panther, along with a plan to aid survival. (Big Cypress National Preserve provides important habitat for some of the few remaining animals). The report is based on workshop discussions regarding population biology of small populations (with application to the panthers), selection and management of captive animals, and demographic/genetic information regarding wild panthers. The goal was to have 130 breeding animals (wild and in captivity) by the year 2000. Without the immediate improvement of reproductive success outlined in this plan, extinction was expected within 25-40 years.
