Floristics of the Barataria Basin wetlands, Louisiana
Conner WH, Sasser CE, Barker N. 1986. Floristics of the Barataria Basin wetlands, Louisiana. Castanea. 51(2):111-128
Six types of vegetative communities can be found in the Baratarian Basin: bottomland hardwood forest; swamp; freshwater marsh; brackish marsh; salt marsh; and disturbed areas with successional growth. These areas are described. One hundred and thirteen families, 313 genera, and 523 species of vasuclar plants were identified from this area. A large number of species come from the Barataria Basin that are uncommon elsewhere such as the orchid Eulophia ecristata. A checklist of vascular flora species found in Barataria Bay is included within this article (pp. 118-125). Table 1: Land and water areas in the Barataria Basin. Table 2: Number of plant species by habitat type (i.e. bottomland hardwoods, etc.) Table 3: Summary of the vascular flora of Barataria Basin.
