Little previous research had concerned fluvial marshes along large canyon rivers, where geomorphic patterns differ from the typical floodplains and terraces of rivers which are free to spread out. Effective methods for managing these canyon marshlands and their associated plants and animals are discussed. Consistently available marshes are important to riparian obligate species, but management of a regulated river such as the Colorado River through Grand Canyon must consider other resources as well. The tie between river regulation and development of fluvial marshes raises questions which need to be addressed within the river management plans and goals.
