Shoalgrass (Diplanthera wrightii), a submergent spermatophyte, comprised 84 and 88 percent by volume of the respective diets of redheads (Aythya americana) and pintails (Anas acuta) wintering on Laguna Madre, Texas. Lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) consumed mostly animal foods, chiefly molluscs. The prominence of shoalgrass in the diet of redheads and pintails is due to its abundance in Laguna Madre, where there are few other rooted aquatic plants.
