Acrostichum in Florida

The authors conducted field studies of several Acrostichum aureum L. and Acrostichum danaeifolium Langsd. & Fisch. in South Florida swamps. Characteristics of the ferns are described, and the authors compare the two plants. In South Florida, A. aureum is the less common species and is restricted to the saline muck of mangrove communities. A. danaeifolium occurs in saline mangroves and extends inland to freshwater swamps, is common to sink holes in hammocks, and is found in disturbed marl sites and has weedy tendencies. Illustrations are included.
