From the data gathered in Big Bend National Park over the summer of 1981 and analyzed during 1982, several aspects of the foraging behavior of 'nectar bats' have been elucidated. 1. Multiple cues are used by the bats to assess resource depreciation. 2. The internal state of the animal influences residence time, giving-up time and/or the rules that determine these. 3. Feeding strategies in Leptonycteris are learned, not innate. Adult bats forage more efficiently than do young bats. 4. Size and shape of the bats influences foraging parameters.
