Foraging of Gray Wolves at a Great Blue Heron Rookery

A radio-collared adult female gray wolf (Canis lupus) was found on at least five occasions to scavenge beneath a nesting colony of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) in northern Wisconsin. Food available to wolves beneath the rookery consisted of recently dropped fish and some heron chicks. Nineteen percent of 84 scats collected within a 5-km radius of the rookery contained fish bones and scales and/or heron feathers, indicating that the rookery provided a frequent source of food for the wolf pack, which was made up of the alpha pair, 2 yearlings and at least 2 pups.
