A description of the spruce-fir forest and its significance to the region is followed by an account of what is known about tree mortality and the various research efforts in progress. There is adequate fir regeneration; trees less than 20 to 30 years old are not significantly damaged by the aphid; such trees may reproduce at about age 25. Red Spruce trees show signs of decline (foliage loss, decrease in new wood in the trunks, and necrotic spots on the needles) all warning signs. A detailed list of research programs (as of 1986) follows.
