Potassium-argon age of Devils Tower, Wyoming

Bassett WA. 1961. Potassium-argon age of Devils Tower, Wyoming. Science. 134(3487):1373

Devils Tower consists of conlumnar phonolite prophyry which contains large phenocrysts of orthoclases. Potassium-argon determinations on the orthoclase indicate an age of 40.5 milion years +/- 4 percent. This is consistent with the geologcially accepted Tertiary age.
