Active Dispersal and Passive Transport in Drosophila

Populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura, D. persimilis, and D. miranda have been sampled repeatedly in several localities in western United States, mainly in California, since 1937 or since 1945. Drosophila pseudoobscura Frolova, 1939, from Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands. (Diptera: Drosophilidae). During the period covered by the observations, considerable changes have taken place in the relative abundance of these species. D. persimilis and D. miranda have very appreciably expanded their distribution areas. Passive transport of the flies, presumably by wind, is responsible for these area expansions. Active dispersal is far too slow. It is suggested that three kinds of vagility be distinguished: directional migration, active dispersal, and passive transport. Only the second and the third are known to occur in Drosophila.
