This paper, based on study of landslides in the Redwood Creek basin, contrasts block slides on schist with the larger earth flows common on nearby Franciscan sedimentary areas. Differences are found in 'morphology, movement and lithologic controls.' Although an individual block slide is likely to contribute less sediment to Redwood Creek than an active earth flow, totals for the schist study area are similar to those for earth flows throughout the whole Redwood Creek basin. The study described has identified 35 schist block slides in lower Redwood Creek basin through field mapping, finding the slides important in creating surface features within this lithologic unit.
