This structural geology of the western portion of Joshua Tree National Monument concerns the exposed igneous rocks. In discussing the lithology, the author provides information on the age and origin of Pinto gneiss, gabbro-diorite, Palms quartz monzonite, White Tank quartz monzonite, and others. Some of the area valleys have developed because of the differences in erosion rates among these, the White Tank quartz monzonite eroding more readily than the others. In other areas, surface features such as valleys are the result of faulting. The most notable geologic processes in the study area are metamorphism and intrusion. Black-and-white photographs show rock formations which demonstrate weathering, and a number of photomicrographs illustrate different rock types.
