During 1992 an inventory was conducted to determine the extent of the jurisdictional wetlands within the Richmond National Battlefield Park , using the 1989 Federal Manual for Identifying and Delineating Jurisdictional Wetlands. Each wetland was mapped, its principal vegetation inventoried, soil features described, and average monthly water table depth measured. The park has a total of six distinct wetlands, located in the following units: Malvern Hill, Fort Harrison, Cold Harbor, Watt House, Beaver Dam Creek, and Chickahominy Bluff. All are palustrine, broad-leaved, deciduous wetlands except Beaver Dam Creek, which is mostly composed of dead trees. Collectively, these wetlands total 18.8 ha (46.2 ac), about 6 percent of the park land.
